International Work
The UK’s Public Interest Disclosure Act is widely seen as an international benchmark on whistleblowing. Due to our role in devising and promoting the legislation, we are regularly asked to contribute to and assist with international developments on whistleblowing, governance and accountability.
From Norway to New Zealand and from Japan to Nigeria, we have advised and provided guidance on the policy, law and practice of public interest whistleblowing. We have advised the Governments of Japan and South Africa on their legislation and have assisted the European Commission, the OECD, the Council of Europe and the World Bank develop their whistleblowing schemes.
We have also briefed German judges and politicians; officials in Netherlands; civil society in Nigeria; and the Bar in Japan. We have addressed conferences in Australia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Norway, Pakistan and the USA. We have trained Inspectors General from Iraq; briefed journalists from China, givne workshops for civil servants in Switzerland and lectured law officers from Lithuania. We have addressed international events on Corruption, the Environment, Ethics, Governance, Human Rights, Nuclear Risks and Transparency.
We have sister organisations in South Africa, the Open Democracy Advice Centre, and in the USA, the Government Accountability Project.
To inform and influence international developments we published Whistleblowing Around the World , a practical guide for policymakers, professionals and activists looking to get whistleblowing right in their countries. The book was commended in the Law Teacher as “a treasure of information…. [that] helps understand the dilemmas connected with the phenomenon of whistleblowing ”.
